I remember when I first came across the Twinkie Diet article online.
I literally laughed out loud.
I thought to myself “Wow, the food industry has really gone crazy.”
How can any one pitch the idea of losing weight on a twinkie diet?
How can you possibly lose weight eating something that is known to make you fat?
As absurd as it sounds, it is possible and it will work if you do it the right way.
After clicking on the article, I discovered that it was Professor Mark Haub from the Kansas State University was who came up with the idea to try this out.
For 10 weeks, Mark ate Twinkies every three hours instead of regular meals.
He sometimes substituted with Doritos, cereals that were high in sugar, and Oreo cookies.
Why did he decide to do the Twinkie Diet?
Professor Mark Haub wanted to prove that weight-loss is a science and that all that matters when dieting is counting calories, not the actual nutritional value of food.
He limited himself to 1,800 calories a day in order to consume less calories than he burned.
Surprisingly, the Twinkie Diet worked!
To shock you further, Mark lost 27 pounds in 2 months and his body max index went from 28.8 (considered overweight for men) to 24.9 (considered normal for men) .
What’s really amazing is that his bad cholesterol dropped 20 percent and his good cholesterol increased by 20 percent
He also reduced the level of triglycerides which is a form of fat, by 39 percent.
Yes, I am still surprised and amazed everytime I think or talk about this article, I’m sure you are too.
Why The Twinkie Diet Works
Just how Professor Haub set out to prove, calories are all that matters!
Whether you consume 1,800 calories of chicken breast and salad, or 1,800 calories of Twinkies, you will lose weight!
As long as your total amount of calories at the end of the day are less than the amount that you burned, you will lose weight.
Whenever you see someone who eats junk food or a lot of sweets but maintains their weight, it’s not because they are special or have a gift.
It just means that they burn more calories everyday than they consume.
Yes, some people have faster metabolisms, but all that matters is the total calories you eat vs. the total calories you burn regardless of how fast or slow your metabolism is.
Should You Do The Twinkie Diet?
As fun and appetizing as the Twinkie Diet sounds, I can’t say that I would recommend it.
Of course you’ll lose weight, but your body will be missing out on important vitamins and minerals.
Sugar also craves sugar, so I am sure that you will be hungry ALL the time while experimenting with the Twinkie Diet.
The high amount of sugar that you will be consuming will be spiking your insulin all day long thus creating a sugar crash every couple of hours.
I can’t imagine that Professor Haub felt amazing while doing the Twinkie Diet.
Sure, he experienced weight-loss and improvements in his blood work, but he sure didn’t go about it the healthiest way.
I believe it’s a much better idea to eat healthy while allowing yourself a couple tasty snacks here and there, if you WANT them.
As long as your snacks don’t put you over your calorie limit for the day, you will lose weight by not depriving yourself while dieting.

Alex
