If you have business goals, there are vital things you must focus on to achieve them.
I’ve seen many people with business goals doing the wrong things.
Instead of moving closer to success, they move further.
Success will always require determination and hard work.
There is no “perfect” road map to get you to your goals.
However, there are things you must do correctly in order to get there as fast/efficiently as possible.
1) What is it EXACTLY that you want?
You have to as specific as possible.
If you ask most people this question, they’ll respond with – “to make more money”.
Does that sound specific to you?
Are you telling your mind exactly what you want and where to guide you?
NO.
Let’s try it again….
What is it exactly that you want?
“I want to earn $5,000.00 a month selling t-shirts online.”
Now that’s a specific goal!
You now know exactly what you want and by focusing on it daily, your mind will begin seeking and presenting opportunities to make it your reality.
Never overlook the importance of specific and clear goals.
2) Who has what you want?
If you’re stubborn and have an “I’ll figure it ALL out myself” mentality, I have bad news for you.
You’re going to waste a lot of time.
I admire determined people who work hard for what they want, but you can’t be stubborn.
You must find people who have what you want and ask them for guidance.
If you’re scared, shy, nervous, stubborn, hate people, or anything else; get over it!
Asking people who already have what you want will save you a lot of time and possibly money.
Talk to them, study them, and most importantly, learn from their mistakes.
Besides finding people who have what you want, you should read books, listen to audio recordings, and attend seminars (if available) on your subject.
Trying to figure out everything on your own and making a ton of mistakes is unnecessary.
Work smarter, not harder.
3) What do you have to give up?
It’s no secret and EVERY successful person will tell you the same thing.
In order to be successful, you will have to sacrifice in some area of your life.
This might mean spending less money on unnecessary things.
Spending less time with friends.
Getting up earlier in the morning.
Whatever it is that you want will require sacrifice.
There’s no doubt about it.
The good news is that the more you sacrifice and the harder you work, the faster you’ll get there.
When I started this blog, I sacrificed hanging out with friends on Friday nights.
Friday nights with the guys was a weekly routine.
But I gave it up knowing it was necessary.
I knew that if I wanted to make progress with Inertia Will Hurt Ya, Friday nights had to go.
Do I regret it?
NO.
I got A LOT of work done and as a result, my blog has grown immensely.
Remember that sacrifice is only temporary.
Now that I’ve done a lot of the foundation work, I can resume Friday nights with friends.
4) How long will it take?
This will ultimately depend on your business goals.
Someone who wants to run a snow cone business will become successful sooner than someone who wants to run a six figure blog.
All things considered, of course.
Both business goals require different amounts of work, time, and dedication.
The time it’ll take is irrelevant.
Some people say – “it takes as long as it takes”.
I say that if it’s your business goal, you shouldn’t ask that type of question.
Instead, your concern should be to always be making some type of progress.
Let’s use the snow cone business example again.
We’ll pretend you’re starting out brand new in the snow cone world.
Today you’ll contact businesses who sell snow cone carts.
You’ll ask about pricing, guarantee, delivery, and even business advice.
You’ll do your best to find the best deal possible.
Once you scratch that off the list, you’ll move on to the next step.
You’ll start considering locations.
You’ll call different parks in your city and ask about permits necessary to sell snow cones there.
You’ll also learn how to advertise your business for birthday parties and other events.
Do you see what’s going on here?
I’m not running a successful snow cone business overnight, but I’m making progress.
Your concern shouldn’t be – “How long it’ll take”.
Your concern should be – “Am I making progress?”
5) When should you give up?
As long as your making progress…
NEVER.
Make progress.
Achieve your goals.
Take a nice vacation to celebrate.

Alex,
Another excellent article! You’re right, time is irrelevant. What IS relevant is what you put forth in order to achieve your goals. They don’t happen miraculously and definitely not overnight. Progress is key.
Another good point about the paths taken. There’s no perfect outline and no one size fits all plan. Honestly, we all do different things and we all have our own roads to travel. I really like this.
Thanks for sharing!

Alex,
Always happy to share my thoughts. You’re 100% correct about giving up. It’s definitely not an option. If you don’t have any goals or dreams either, what do you have? Nothing. So keep everything alive by continuously reaching to a higher level!

“Keep everything alive by continuously reaching a higher level” – I like the way this sounds.

Great thoughts, Chris. The feedback will come in time but only to those people who NEVER quit. Whether it takes a year, two years, or longer to get traffic and feedback; it’s worth the wait. That is of course if you’re serious about your blog and creating something of value that helps people. I didn’t write this article just for people looking to be successful with an online business, but for ALL and ANY business goals that anyone may have. The traffic to your website will come. Check out my article The Vicious Viking. In it I talk about about my traffic and how it grew and continues to grow, month after month. A blog requires A LOT of patience. So much patience in fact that most people who start one, quit. I checked out your blog, you seem to be heading in the right direction. Whatever you do, don’t quit. Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts and ideas.

The thing about online business is that you aren’t “scouting locations” at all. You’re doing everything you can to get people to visit. IMO from there it’s easy so long as you take your message, your style, and your business seriously. The biggest hurdle online is getting traffic, and progress can be measured by traffic and traffic flow. The rest is your soul on display. The problem comes when you have no feedback about your creation. That’s where a little self belief(and actually putting in the time and effort to create something badass) goes a long way.
Just some thoughts.

Well written, Alex. It’s true, you should make progress every day. You’re not going to accomplish the same amount of work every day, but you must accomplish something. One step closer is better than zero steps.
You’ve made a good point about knowing exactly what you want. Personally, I believe we all have some sort of idea of what it is that we want, but many of us were raised to repress our wants and urges or ignore them, choosing to do “the right thing.” The thing is, “the right thing” is to do what we want, and we better be specific. Otherwise, how can you plan your mission, if you don’t have the details? You can’t.
