Action, my friend.
Taking action will get you whatever it is that you want.
Unfortunately, taking action is also the hardest part.
Anyone can read a book, watch an educational video, or attend a seminar.
It’s easy, you pay to be taught – sometimes it’s even free.
You don’t have to do ANYTHING but sit there and listen or read.
Sure, sitting down and reading or watching an educational video instead of a TV show requires a little discipline, but it still isn’t taking action.
What does reading a book, watching a video, or attending a seminar do?
It provides you a temporary escape.
A temporary high of “Yeah, I’m taking action to better myself”.
However, once the book is complete…
Once the YouTube video displays the replay button…
Once everyone gives a standing ovation at the end of the seminar…
You come face to face with the moment of truth.
It’s time to apply what you’ve learned.
And here you are again, knowing that YOU need to do something.
It’s a moment of desperation where you know you should be taking action.
However, you find excuses to “do it later”, instead.
“I should apply all the changes and techniques I learned in the website seminar to my website but it’s going to take hours and I have to do this and that”.
“I should go to the supermarket and buy all the healthy foods I learned about in the book I read but I don’t feel like leaving the house today.”
What happens next?
“I’ll do it later” becomes never.
And as time passes by, you simply forget half of what you learned and tell yourself:
“It’s time to read another book, the first one didn’t really help me”.
Does this make sense to you?
You seek another temporary high and escape from reality.
The reality is that no book, video, or seminar is going to help you.
Sure, you’re going to learn vital things…
But YOU are the only one who’s going to help you.
And how are you going to do that?
Taking action!
You miss 100 % of the shots you never take.
That’s a very famous quote from hockey player Wayne Gretzky.
It’s one of my personal favorite quotes because I find it very motivating.
Let’s use me and Inertia Will Hurt Ya as an example.
Before starting this blog, I read a ton of books and watched many videos on blogging.
So many in fact that it got to the point where I felt I was reading/watching the same information over and over.
I learned a bunch of great tips and techniques.
Things like mistakes to avoid, how often to post, building your audience, and so on.
Can you guess what my very first mistake was?
For about a month and half, I didn’t take ANY action.
Even though I learned all these amazing things, I just kept reading and watching videos.
I probably knew more than the average blogger from all the information and knowledge I acquired.
I felt confident and ready to begin but still took no action.
It wasn’t until I got tough on myself and said:
“OK, I can continue learning all these great things but if I keep doing this, in a month, I’m going to have the exact same thing I have now – a lot of knowledge but no blog.”
I purchased Inertia Will Hurt Ya from Godaddy.com and hosted it with Hostgator.
Note: You can purchase and host your website/blog with Hostgator.com only.
Interestingly enough, just getting started was all the motivation I needed.
I took one step after the other.
I purchased the domain name, installed all the plugins and began writing my first article.
It wasn’t long before my first article was published.
“Wow, what the hell have I been waiting for?” I asked myself.
Ever since that day, my blog has grown daily like a building under construction.
People are responding very well to my content and Inertia Will Hurt Ya has taken on a life of its own.
Where would I be today if I was STILL reading books/articles and watching videos?
I would probably be a “genius blogger” with no blog.
Isn’t that funny?
I would be a “handicap blogger” seeing that I have the skills but can’t take any action.
It’s like having a million dollars in cash under your bed and just leaving it there.
If you invest it properly, you could live in a first class lifestyle for the rest of your life in many places all over the world.
…and that’s just off the interest meaning you’ll never have to do anything again.
But if you just leave it under the mattress, what good does it do?
So I ask you – where are you playing the handicap victim?
Where are you not taking action that you should be?
What’s the game you’re playing and the lies you’re telling yourself?
I promise that taking action is MUCH more rewarding than that temporary high.
In the moment, it doesn’t feel as good but at the end, it’s WAY better.
Think of it as settling for popcorn at the movies.
You get to concession stand and have the option of purchasing popcorn that’s been sitting or waiting for the fresh popcorn that’ll be ready in 10 minutes.
In the moment, the already made popcorn seems like the better option.
You don’t have to wait.
However, if you wait for the fresh popcorn, it will be MUCH better.
When you DON’T settle for the easier option, you always get a better result.
The temporary high of putting things off to later, or reading more books to “learn more”, or attending another seminar becomes an addiction that never delivers a rewarding outcome.
Sure, you still have to learn and study your field as you apply what you learn.
But if you never take action, you’re just wasting valuable time and setting yourself up for disappointment.
Disappointment that you still haven’t actually began what you’ve always wanted to do.
Look at this way, whether you start today, tomorrow, or in two years; you STILL have to begin.
However…
The more time you waste, the more time you DON’T GET BACK.
Write that down on a post-it note and place it somewhere you’ll see it daily.
Look, I know it’s easier to put off things for later, I’ve been there.
I know it’s easier to just read another book or watch another video, I’ve been there.
But I also know the feeling of “Damn, why didn’t I start sooner?” – Because I live it EVERY DAY!
Every single day I wish I would have begun WAY before I did.
I often wonder:
How many other readers could I have if I would have started sooner?
How many other readers got the answer they were looking for from another source because my blog wasn’t born yet?
Take action right now!
Forget all the lies you’re telling yourself.
Forget all the instant gratification you’re settling for.
Forget fooling yourself and wasting valuable time and just do what you need to do!
Get it over with!
Again, I promise it’ll be much MORE rewarding than the temporary high and escape you’re settling for now.
Take a shot at your goals before time runs out and you lose the game.
We’ll talk again soon,
-Alex

Yup! You just gotta go for it. I’ve done a lot of not going for it and only a little bit of shot taking, and I can say it doesn’t take much for things to start changing. Good things don’t actually happen to those who wait.

I like what you said there at the end, Chris – Good things don’t actually happen to those that wait. “Waiting” just results in regret and additional pressure since you know that you have yet to even begin. I hope the article motivated you to do more shot taking!

Great article, Alex! What Wayne Gretzky said is very true. How will you know if you never actually take the chance? If you’re not taking a chance, you’re not putting yourself out there. Which, to me, is a large part in just breaking out of the normal and moving toward some place that you desire in life. Whether that’s business itself, or becoming more social, or even just building up your physique.
I know the feeling of reading and reading and feeling like you’re taking action. You get stuck in a cycle where you feel like you’re productive. Sure, reading is great, but make it a point to learn something from it.
When I started Establish Vitality, it was NOTHING like what I thought. I speculated and never really knew what it was like until I started. Now, I just keep going.
I actually read an article about procrastinating and those who doubt or procrastinate tend to continuously read and read to find out more information to “feel” like they’re ready. It’s a vicious cycle that we must all break and stay out of. Just keep going one step at a time. Great, thought provoking article!

Excellent comment, Jacob. That article sounds VERY interesting and makes a whole lot of sense. “Those who doubt or procrastinate tend to continously read and read until they feel like they’re ready”. PURE GOLD! Please share the link to the article if you still have it. Thanks for the feedback and for sharing your thoughts/opinions.

Alex,
Thank you. I have actually been there myself with doubting continuously. I just kept reading and it felt like I was “doing” something, but I was just pushing my goals further away and I never took any REAL action. It seems that it’s just an illusion.
Here’s the link for that article. It actually has some good tips if you’re ever in doubt about yourself. I think it’s very common in society these days and we need to learn to trust ourselves again.

It’s actually a pretty good blog from what I have been reading recently. They have an article on there that I linked to in reference to my latest post about black tea and how you can improve your mood, focus and energy with about two cups per day.
Thanks Alex, I think you actually sparked this and I was able to throw a helpful article in here!

Glad you were able to find the link! Thanks again for sharing! By the way, I’m sure A LOT of people can identify with – it felt like I was “doing” something. Thanks again for the great comment, Jacob.

Exactly, Tara! As you said, people expect things to “magically” appear, and when they don’t, they blame everything and everyone but themselves. As long as you’re constantly applying what you learn, you’ll make progress. Great comment!

I often go to Wayne Gretzky’s pub in Dowtown Toronto, but have never heard this brilliant quote. So thank you for that!
Instant gratification is a plague these days, as well as a feeling of self-entitlement. People think that they deserve stuff just because they exist, and they have no patience when they don’t receive it right away. The paradox is that instead of working towards their goals they postpone action in hopes that things will magically happen. But the reality is, you have to take a shot at your goals. And then another one, and another one. Because eventually, practice makes perfect (or at least makes better).
Fantastic article.
